World War 1
The display describes how the Whalsay community was affected by the war. Areas looked at were people
serving, communication, family stories, health care, fishing, home life, crofting and more.
We have been very lucky in receiving donations of items related to WW1 from families in the community to show an impressive display of artefacts including photos, postcards, medals and memorial plaques.
How WW1 Affected a Small Island Community
The World War 1 project entitled "How WW1 Affected a Small Island Community" was put together by a group of Shetland College students with the help of the Heritage Centre volunteers. The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2014 to commemorate the start of the war. It will be on display till 2018 over the Centenary of the Armistice.
